Learn how to add new variations to your Etsy listings using Gelato

Updated over 3 months ago

This article explains how to add a new variation to an existing listing on your Etsy store. There are two methods to achieve this: creating variants directly on Gelato or creating them on Etsy and then connecting them to your Gelato account.

Creating Variants on Gelato

This method allows you to seamlessly add variations to products created within the Gelato Dashboard. Follow these steps:

  1. Locate the product you want to modify in your store and select "Edit Design".

  2. On the left side of the product detail page, choose the new variations you want to add (sizes, colors, etc.) and adjust the design accordingly.

  3. Save your changes by clicking "Publish."

For this method to work correctly, ensure that:

  • The product was originally created on the Gelato Dashboard.

  • All variations are connected and set as "Not Ignored."

  • All variations belong to the same product type (e.g., you can't have some posters with frames and others without).

Creating Variations on Etsy

If you need to add a completely new variation type to your product (like adding a "Frame" option), you'll need to create it on Etsy first. This process involves modifying the product structure, which can impact existing variants and SKU configurations.

  1. Open your listing in the Etsy Shop Manager and click on "Edit variations."

  2. Add your new variation by clicking "Add." For example, you might add "Frame" as a new variation type.

  3. Create options within your new variation. Using our "Frame" example, you'd add options like "No Frame" and "Black Frame."

  4. Ensure that all checkboxes next to your new variation for "Price/Quantities/SKUs 'vary for each size'" are enabled. This ensures that each new variation can have its own pricing, quantity, and SKU settings.

  5. Go to your Gelato Dashboard, navigate to "Stores," and select the store page containing your products.

  6. Click on "Sync products" in the top right corner to update your Gelato product list. Your new variant will appear as "Not connected."

  7. Connect the new variation to Gelato by following the instructions here.

Important: If there's a price difference between variations, ensure the "Prices vary for each XXX" box is checked (e.g., "Prices vary for each size"). This step is crucial for correctly connecting your new product variations to Gelato.
