How do I use the product expansion feature?
Updated over a month ago

This article explains how to use the product expansion tool. This feature allows Shopify and Etsy users to easily apply their designs to new products, potentially boosting sales and average order value.

How It Works

Follow these steps to expand your product offerings:

  1. Go to your Gelato dashboard and select a product from your Shopify or Etsy store. Click the "Expand Product" button located in the upper right corner. Choose the product types you want to include.

  2. Add mockups to your new variants and choose the scene for each product type.

  3. Set prices for your products using the Set Prices tool.

  4. Review the new variants and the product summary.

  5. Double-check your changes and selections, then click "Continue." Your products will be published in your Shopify or Etsy store.

After publishing your new products, review them to ensure the design fits your requirements. If needed, use the "Edit" function to make changes. Ensure your design file has a resolution of at least 150 dpi for the chosen products and sizes.

You have the flexibility to list different product types as a single item or separate listings, giving you more control over inventory and enhancing the customer experience.

If you choose to expand your product as a "variant" you will not be able to bulk edit the designs. If you delete the expanded variants you will then be able to bulk edit again.

Once you expand a specific variant, you cannot select that same variant again if you attempt to expand it a second time. For example: If you have already selected the Museum Quality Poster variant and use the expansion button to add another Museum Quality Poster to the listing, this option will no longer be available for selection when you expand the product again.

Important Considerations for Etsy Users

When using Gelato's product expansion for multi-category items with varying sizes, Etsy automatically generates inactive variants for sizes not selected during expansion. These inactive variants won't be visible to your customers. For instance, if you selected the 20x20 cm / 8x8" variant for Canvas but didn't select this size when expanding into Posters, Etsy would create inactive variants for the unselected sizes. It's crucial to leave the toggle for such variants unchanged to ensure they remain hidden.
