Can I connect and create variants in bulk?

Easily update or expand your product catalog using our bulk connect feature. This operation allows you to update existing product variants, create new ones using a prototype as a reference, and publish the changes directly to your store.

Updated this week

Important: This operation will affect your store listings and cannot be undone. Please ensure your uploaded files are accurate before proceeding.

Bulk operation features are located in the Gelato dashboard under the Stores tab on your store page, and this feature is called Connect and Create Variants.

This feature is perfect for when you have multiple variants of a product that are very similar except for a few differences like color or size variations. Instead of manually updating each product variant, you can connect them to a prototype product. This allows you to:

  • Quickly create variants based on a prototype, keeping the same design placement and pricing.

  • Expand existing products with additional options like colors or sizes by updating a single prototype and applying those changes across all variants. If your prototype product has, say, 6 colors, but the rest of your products only have 5 colors, you can add the missing color for all the other variants in your batch.

  • Update product details such as images, price, and mockups, and these updates will apply to all connected variants automatically.

For example:
If you have 100 t-shirts with different designs but the same placement (e.g., the same front and back design), you only need to connect one prototype t-shirt. After that, you can upload a CSV file containing the UID and Print File URL for the other t-shirts. The newly connected products will automatically inherit the design placement, pricing, and mockup styles from the prototype.

Follow the steps below to complete the process:

1. Prepare Your Prototype Product

Select a product in your store to use as a prototype. This product will serve as the reference for creating and connecting new variants.

  • Prototype Product ID: This is the ID of the prototype you’ll use. You can find it by copying the ID from the product URL of your chosen prototype.

  • Make sure your prototype has the correct design placement and options (such as price, mockups, etc.) since these will be copied to all the connected variants.

2. Set Up Your CSV File

Your CSV file is key to uploading the product variants. This file should contain all the relevant details for your variants, such as the Product ID, Variant ID, and Print File URL.

Ensure your CSV has these columns in the following order:

  • Product ID: The ID of the product you are adding variants to

  • Product Title: The name of the product.

  • Variant ID: A unique ID for each variant you’re creating or connecting.

  • Variant Title: The name of the variant (e.g., "Red T-shirt").

  • Variant Options: Options like size or color (e.g., "Size M", "Color Red").

  • Variant Connection Status: Specify if you are connecting an existing variant or creating a new one.

  • Product UID: A unique identifier assigned to every product that you can locate in the catalog.

  • Price: The price for the variant (this will be inherited from the prototype unless specified otherwise).

  • Print File URL: The URL for the image or file used for printing the design on the product.

  • Should Publish Images?: Indicate if the image should be published along with the product.

  • Prototype Variant ID: The variant ID of the prototype that you are using as the reference. Required only if the prototype has the same product UID in different variants; otherwise, it can be ignored

Tip: To download a ready-to-use template, click the Export CSV button in the top-right corner.

3. Upload the CSV File

Once your CSV is ready, upload it to the Gelato dashboard under the Create and Connect Variants section in the Stores tab of your store page.

After uploading, your file will be automatically validated for structural accuracy. This means we will check the format and ensure everything is in order before proceeding.

To ensure that the product is published to the store, please select Publish products to external store

4. Enter Your Email Address

Bulk operations can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours to complete, depending on the number of products. To stay updated, enter your email address, and we’ll send you a notification once the process is complete.
