Learn how to make the email field mandatory at checkout in your Shopify store to ensure accurate customer contact information

Updated over 3 months ago

This article provides a step-by-step guide on how to make the email field mandatory at checkout in your Shopify store. This ensures accurate customer contact information for better communication and order processing.

Making Email Mandatory at Checkout

By default, Shopify allows customers to checkout using only their phone numbers. However, collecting customer emails is crucial for various reasons, such as sending order confirmations, shipping updates, and promotional materials.

To make the email field mandatory during checkout, follow these steps:

  1. Access your Shopify admin dashboard and navigate to the 'Settings' section located in the lower-left corner of the page.

  2. From the 'Settings' menu, select 'Checkout'.

  3. In the 'Customer contact method' section, check the 'Email' option.

  4. Save your changes to apply the new configuration.

SMS Notifications as an Alternative

While email is the preferred method for order communication, Shopify offers SMS notifications for order confirmations in specific countries:

  • Australia

  • Brazil

  • Canada

  • France

  • Germany

  • Ireland

  • India

  • Italy

  • Japan

  • New Zealand

  • Spain

  • United Kingdom

  • United States

If your business operates in one of these countries and a customer provides a phone number instead of an email, they will receive order confirmations via SMS. However, please note that shipping notifications will still be sent via email only.
