Resale Certificates and Gelato
A resale certificate is a tax form proving you're buying products to resell or use as components in products you'll resell. It exempts you from sales tax on those purchases. To use one, you generally need to be registered to collect sales tax in at least one US state.
When you upload a valid resale certificate to the Gelato Dashboard, your purchases for resale are tax-free in the states covered by the certificate. However, if a valid certificate is not provided, Gelato is responsible for charging sales tax.
Gelato currently charges sales tax in 44 states, districts, and territories. The exact rate varies depending on the location and is subject to change.
Resale Certificate Guidance Based on Your Business Type
If your business sells on an online marketplace (i.e. Etsy) or your business’ website and is registered in at least 1 US state with sales in the US, please click here for resale certificate assistance.
