Learn how to design brochures for perfect binding

Updated over 2 months ago

This article provides a comprehensive guide on how to design brochures for perfect binding, a professional and sleek binding method that enhances the look and feel of multi-page documents.

Understanding Perfect Binding

Perfect binding, also known as glue binding, involves gluing the pages together at the spine to create a smooth spine edge. This method is ideal for creating brochures, magazines, journals, and books.

Designing Your Perfect Bound Brochure

When designing your brochure, it's essential to consider the spine, which is crucial for perfect binding. The spine width is determined by factors like:

  • Number of pages

  • Paper type (coated or uncoated)

  • Paper weight

For instance, an A4 brochure with 72 pages, a 250 gsm silk cover, and 170 gsm silk inner pages would have a specific spine width. Refer to the provided resources for accurate spine width calculation based on your brochure's specifications.

File Preparation Guidelines

To ensure your brochure is printed perfectly, follow these file preparation guidelines:

  • Design the cover as a spread, including the back cover, spine, and front cover.

  • Make the cover spread the first page of your PDF file.

  • Export the inner pages as single pages and place them after the cover in the PDF.

For example, a 32-page brochure should have a 31-page PDF file. The cover counts as one page because it's exported as a spread, while the remaining 30 inner pages are exported individually.

Calculating the Spine Width

To calculate the minimum cover width for your brochure, use the following formula:

Minimum Cover Width = Bleed + Back Cover Trim Size + Spine Width + Front Cover Trim Size + Bleed

For instance, a 210mm x 297mm cover with 60 inner pages would have a minimum width of 431.429mm (4 + 210 + 3.429 + 210 + 4).

To calculate the minimum cover height, use this formula:

Minimum Cover Height = Bleed + Book Height Trim Size + Bleed

For example, a 210mm x 297mm document cover would have a minimum height of 305mm (4 + 297 + 4).
