Understanding Store Password and Login Credentials in Shopify

This article explains the key difference between a store password and login credentials to help you understand what can be shared safely.

Updated over a month ago

When troubleshooting Shopify-related issues, our support team may need to access your storefront to replicate an issue and better understand your concern. However, we realize that many store owners hesitate to share their credentials due to security concerns.

Store Password vs. Login Credentials: What’s the Difference?

Store Password

  • The store password restricts access to your online store’s storefront.

  • When your store is in password-protected mode (e.g., during setup or maintenance), visitors must enter this password to view your store.

  • Sharing this password allows someone to see your storefront as a customer would, but it does not provide access to your Shopify admin.

  • It is safe to share your store password with trusted individuals, such as our support team, if troubleshooting requires viewing the storefront.

Login Credentials

  • These credentials consist of your email and password, which are used to log into your Shopify admin.

  • They grant full access to your store’s backend, including product management, order processing, customer data, and store settings.

  • These credentials should remain private and should never be shared with anyone, including support agents.

Why This Matters

When our support team needs to assist with storefront-related issues - such as product display errors, layout problems, or missing images - they only need access to the storefront, not your admin panel. If your store is password-protected, sharing your store password allows us to replicate the issue as a customer would experience it, helping us provide a more accurate resolution.

Rest assured, we will never ask for your login credentials, and you should never share them with anyone. By understanding the difference between a store password and login credentials, you can ensure that your store remains secure while still allowing us to assist you effectively.
